DEFINITION OF SHAREWARE
=======================
Shareware distribution gives users a chance to try software
before buying it. If you try a Shareware program and continue
using it, you are legally required to register. With
registration, you get anything from the simple right to continue
using the software to an updated program with printed manual.
Copyright laws apply to both Shareware and commercial software,
and the copyright holder retains all rights, with a few specific
exceptions as stated below. Shareware authors are accomplished
programmers, just like commercial authors, and the programs are
of comparable quality. (In both cases, there are good programs
and bad ones!) The main difference is in the method of
distribution. The author specifically grants the right to copy
and distribute the software, either to all and sundry or to a
specific group. For example, some authors require written
permission before a commercial disk vendor may copy their
Shareware.
Shareware is a distribution method, not a type of software. You
should find software that suits your needs and pocketbook,
whether it's commercial or Shareware. The Shareware system makes
fitting your needs easier, because you can try before you buy.
And because the overhead is low, prices are low also. Shareware
has the ultimate money-back guarantee--if you don't use the
product, you don't pay for it.
DISCLAIMER-AGREEMENT
--------------------
USERS OF GRAPHCAT MUST ACCEPT THIS DISCLAIMER OF WARRANTY:
"GRAPHCAT IS SUPPLIED AS IS. THE AUTHOR DISCLAIMS ALL WARRANTIES,
EXPRESSED OR IMPLIED, INCLUDING, WITHOUT LIMITATION, THE
WARRANTIES OF MERCHANTABILITY AND OF FITNESS FOR ANY PURPOSE. THE
AUTHOR ASSUMES NO LIABILITY FOR DAMAGES, DIRECT OR CONSEQUENTIAL,
WHICH MAY RESULT FROM THE USE OF GRAPHCAT."
GRAPHCAT is a "shareware program" and is provided at no charge to
the user for evaluation. Feel free to share it with your friends,
but please do not give it away altered or as part of another
system. The essence of "user-supported" software is to provide
personal computer users with quality software without high
prices, and yet to provide incentive for programmers to continue
to develop new products. If you find this program useful and find
that you are using GRAPHCAT and continue to use GRAPHCAT after a
period of 30 days, you must make a registration payment of $20.
to Science Translations. The $20. registration fee will license
one copy for use on any one computer at any one time. You must
All Rights Reserved (C) Copyright 1991-93 Jerry Stern

treat this software just like a book. An example is that this
software may be used by any number of people and may be freely
moved from one computer location to another, so long as there is
no possibility of it being used at one location while it's being
used at another, just as a book cannot be read by two different
persons at the same time.
Commercial users of GRAPHCAT must register and pay for their
copies of GRAPHCAT within 30 days of first use or their license
is withdrawn. Site-License arrangements may be made by contacting
Science Translations.
Anyone distributing GRAPHCAT for any kind of remuneration must
first contact Science Translations at the address below for
authorization. This authorization will be automatically granted
to distributors recognized by the ASP as adhering to its
guidelines for shareware distributors, and such distributors may
begin offering GRAPHCAT immediately. Except for ASP members, ALL
RACK VENDORS, SHOW VENDORS, RETAIL DISTRIBUTORS, AND CD-ROM
VENDORS MUST HAVE WRITTEN PERMISSION TO DISTRIBUTE ANY SCIENCE
TRANSLATIONS PRODUCTS.
You are encouraged to pass a copy of the unregistered version of
GRAPHCAT along to your friends for evaluation. Please encourage
them to register their copy if they find that they can use it.
All registered users will receive a copy of the latest version of
GRAPHCAT, an enhanced version of the GRAPHCAT macro, a megabyte
of Wood Clips graphics, discounted upgrades, newsletter
announcements of upgrades and new products, and technical support
for at least one year.
The enhanced (registered) version of GRAPHCAT includes a
configuration file, allowing users to enter their choices of
borders, justification, image height, columns, and catalog title
into the macro.

QUICK START
===========
GRAPHCAT/DOS 3.0 requires EITHER WordPerfect 6.0, any release
date, or WordPerfect 5.1, interim release date 6/29/90 or later.
It is a shareware package of WordPerfect macros that read any
disk or directory, and create a pictorial listing of all the
graphics found. After running the INSTALL.WPM macro for WP60 or
SETUP.BAT file for WP51, run the main macro by pressing Macro
(Alt-F10), and entering GRAPHCAT. Answer the prompts for the
drive and directory, file extension, catalog title, number of
columns, and graphic height. The default values for columns and
height allow 28 graphics per page.
WORDPERFECT 6.0 OR 5.1? (NEW FEATURES)
--------------------------------------
Throughout this manual, when the keystrokes and procedures are
the same for both WordPerfect versions, the steps will be listed
only once. However, when the steps are different, you will see
this:
WP51: Do these steps in WordPerfect 5.1
WP60: Or these in WordPerfect 6.0.
WordPerfect 6.0 has greatly enhanced graphics and macro power, so
there are a few features available in the WP 6.0 version of
Graphcat that are not in the 5.1 edition. The WP60 version has
these enhancements: 1) The sort order that you have set in the
File Manager is the order that your files will be listed in
Graphcat. You can choose to sort by filename, extension, size,
date, and in ascending or descending order. 2) A Graphics-on-Disk
option can save workspace--check the radio button in the main
Graphcat screen to turn it on. 3) All the graphics may be
converted to black and white, or adjusted in many other ways, by
editing the Graphics style named "GRAPHCAT" or the Border style
named "GCAT-BRD". (See the instructions on page 15.) 4) New
graphics formats added to WP60, initial release include BMP and
WMF. 5) Support for WordPerfect Graphics (WPG) includes version
1.0 (WP51), version 1e (Presentations 2.0/DOS), and 2.0 (WP60
shipping graphics).
NOTE: WP60 does NO LONGER SUPPORTS DHP, GEM, IMG, MSP, PNTG, &
PPIC. Keep a copy of the GRAPHCNV program from WP51 to convert
these into WPG format.
ADDITIONAL GRAPHICS DRIVERS: The formats DXF, MGX, and TGA
require extra conversion drivers--call WPCorp. for order info.
All Rights Reserved (C) Copyright 1991-93 Jerry Stern
G R A P H C A T V. 3.0 8
TIF FILES: TIF formats through revision 5.0 are supported, except
those using LZW compression. Some version 6.0 files are
supported, but not all--call WPCorp. support for details.
INTERNATIONAL USERS:
--------------------
Although GRAPHCAT's prompts are in English, all of the internal
macro commands and menu choices have been set using international
equivalents. GRAPHCAT and the INDEX macros should work properly
with ANY WP language module, and the column height measurements
will be accepted in your default measurement. However, I have not
been able to test every possible international combination of
software, interim release, and hardware. Please write if you find
that GRAPHCAT fails in any way on your system. Also note: the
interim release requirement of the 6/29/90 release applies to US
WordPerfect 5.1. Other language versions may require a newer
release. If you aren't sure whether your release of WP has the
needed added feature, just go ahead and run GRAPHCAT: the macro
automatically tests for the needed new feature.
INDEX AND FILEINDX
------------------
The INDEX macros read any file directory, and convert the
directory listing into a comma-delimited mail-merge file for use
by PC-File, or most other database programs. They are
automatically installed along with GRAPHCAT, and answer the
prompts in the same way. For instructions on the INDEX macros and
FILEINDX, see page 16.
WP51: There are three versions of the INDEX macros for WP51, and
only one is needed or usable on your system. See the instructions
for help.
WP60: INDEX.WPM works in a different way than the WP51 versions
of INDEX--one version works on all systems, but requires that the
file INDEX.PRS be available in the WP printer directory.
FILEINDX requires a database program. These database files are
used with INDEX to create a database of graphics files (or any
other files). Load these files into a directory readable by the
database program, and run the program normally. Be sure to delete
or overwrite the one sample record already in the file.

WOOD CLIPS
----------
The files with .WPG extensions are clip art. The patterns and
styles vary greatly, and they are provided as handy files for
testing GRAPHCAT. They are all wood cut engravings, known as Wood
Clips.
INSTALLATION
============
If you are reading these files on screen, you may print them with
the PRINTDOC.BAT batch file. (Don't print them from WordPerfect--
they are formatted with page breaks for printing from DOS.)
From the DOS prompt, log to the directory holding the GRAPHCAT
distribution files. Start the PRINTDOC file by typing it like
this:
printdoc lpt1
(where lpt1 is the name of your printer--change it as needed for
your system.)
WP60: GRAPHCAT is installed by running the macro INSTALL.WPM.
(This macro will not run in WP51--see the explanation of
SETUP.BAT below for WP51.) The macro will display a box showing
four directories: 1) The source drive for the GRAPHCAT files,
initially a:. Edit this line as needed if your files are in
another area, such as c:\download, for example. 2) The macro
directory for WP60. This entry should generally be correct,
unless you use more than one macro directory. 3) The new
directory to create for the GRAPHCAT sample graphics and doc
files, c:\graphcat initially. Edit this entry if you would like
the docs and graphics elsewhere. 4) The printer file directory
for WP60, where INDEX.PRS will be copied.
WP51: To install the GRAPHCAT macros to the WordPerfect 5.1 macro
directory, run the batch file SETUP.BAT from the DOS prompt while
logged to the GRAPHCAT distribution disk or directory. You will
need to know where WordPerfect 5.1 keeps your macros, usually
c:\wp51\wpm or c:\wp51.
If you do not know where your WordPerfect macros should be
placed, press Setup (Shift-F1), choose (6) Location of Files, and
write down the setting next to (2) Keyboard/Macro Files. Press
Cancel (F1) twice to return to the document screen.

WHAT IS GRAPHCAT?
=================
I've been collecting clip art for different projects. A small
book, some newsletters, signs, and still more pictorial projects.
I've drawn some, scanned some paper clip art, and bought some
disks of pictures. I was beginning to lose track of which disk
had what pictures. I needed an index, a printout of every graphic
I had, so I could keep them handy for reference.
The WPG files shipped with WordPerfect have their own printed
picture indexes of art in the manual, but disks of PCX or TIF
files from computer show rack vendors are escapees from that
elusive paperless office we all keep hearing about. And clip art
disks are uneven; some of them are full disks of excellent art on
related topics, but others are totally unrelated pictures. Worse,
because there are several flavors of each of the graphics file
formats, some files will not be recognized by WordPerfect, and
will read as bad. Overall, clip art disks are worthwhile, but a
printed index would help sort the good files from the fuzzy junk.
And the commercial clip art isn't much better. Oh, the graphics
are better, but the printed indexes are printed too small, or on
newsprint, or are all mixed in with the pictures of every other
graphic collection sold by that company.
Meanwhile, my co-workers on a newsletter project wanted to see
all their clip art. I kept their graphics on a separate disk, but
they wanted paper copies to refer to, so they could tell me, "Use
that butterfly picture from page two." I began to create a sample
document, with every graphic shown, and the file names, and the
disk titles, and immediately found that there was too much work
involved. I had two options: I could delegate the job, or write a
macro to do the job. Since I couldn't find anyone who would spend
three hours to create the index for each disk, I wrote GRAPHCAT.
It's a lot faster than an assistant; it only takes from a few
seconds to a few minutes to complete the job, depending on the
speed of the computer and the size of the graphics files.
GRAPHCAT makes this task easy, so easy that nearly no effort is
needed to create a new catalog for each directory or floppy of
pictures. If the macro is told the drive and path of the files,
the computer should do the rest.
With just that information, the WordPerfect macro reads the
appropriate directory, identifies the graphics files, sets their
sizes, locations, and options in a catalog, and leaves that
catalog ready to print. Once the catalog is built, you may
preview it, print it, and save it if you want.

G R A P H C A T V. 3.0 11
WP51: WordPerfect corporation has a habit of tinkering with their
software. There are many different versions of WordPerfect 5.1
for MS-DOS systems. Some of their interim releases are mostly bug
fixes, and a few new drivers for new hardware; the new releases
also include minor new features. The 6/29/90 release included a
new macro command, {SYSTEM}entry, or in international editions,
{SYSTEM}29. It can copy a file name off a List Files (F5) menu.
GRAPHCAT uses that macro command, so users of earlier versions of
WP MUST upgrade.
To check your WP release date, press Help (F3) from the document
screen of WP. The release date will be in the top right corner of
the introductory help screen. To upgrade to the newest release of
WP 5.1, call your local WordPerfect corporate office.
Instructions for installing the upgrade come with the disks, but
be sure to check for, and read, a README file on the first disk
of each type. That README file will list the features added to
the program in that release. (WP sales phone number in the U.S.,
as of Summer '93, is 1-800-321-4566 or 1-801-226-6800.) I cannot
speak for WordPerfect Corporation, so of course all such
information is subject to change--call and ask amounts before
sending them money.
Interim Releases of WP: Writing software in a macro language
is tricky, like controlling a rowboat by towing it from a
distance of five parsecs. However, GRAPHCAT for DOS has been
tested on all releases of WordPerfect 5.1, and the macro
language in WP 6.0 is feature-oriented rather than the old
keystroke-recorder, so all the macro features should work in
all future releases. BUT, sometimes new "features" disable
old features. If this happens, try turning "off" the new
features if the macros don't seem to like the new release.
When in doubt, write for support--there will be either a fix
or a new release, as needed, to fix any problems caused by
new features.

PROMPTS--THE INPUT SCREEN
=========================
Start GRAPHCAT from a blank document screen by pressing Macro
(Alt-F10), typing GRAPHCAT, and pressing Enter. A second document
screen must be blank as well, but not to worry: GRAPHCAT checks
for workspace and will not let you do anything dangerous. A full-
screen display will appear.
DRIVE:\PATH
-----------
At the first prompt, enter the drive name and path for the
subdirectory to be searched. You may omit the ending backslash if
you like. GRAPHCAT is smart enough to accept the path name either
way.
WP51: Pressing Cancel (F1) at this prompt will end macro
execution. Pressing Cancel at any of the following prompts will
move the cursor back up to the prompt immediately above.
WP60: Pressing Cancel (Esc) at any time, or clicking on Cancel,
will end the macro. You may move between the prompts with Tab or
the arrow keys. Click on OK when done.
EXTENSION OR FILE MASK
----------------------
The second prompt asks for the file type. Any type of graphics
file readable by WordPerfect may be entered here. If your files
are kept sorted by what they are, such as DrawPerfect pictures
together as WPG files, or scanned artwork as TIF files, they will
be easier to keep track of, but if they are mixed together with
lots of different types of files, that's o.k., too.
WP51: You may enter up to three characters at this prompt--only
the file extension may be chosen in GRAPHCAT for WP51. However,
you can use standard DOS wild cards. These include the asterisk,
meaning "any characters, any length," and the question mark,
meaning "any character, just one." A request for files with the
P* or P?? extension would cause GRAPHCAT to hunt for files whose
extensions begin with P, including graphic files such as PCX and
PIC images.
WP60: The default selection for files to examine is *.WPG, and
you may use standard DOS wild cards, as for WP51, to specify the
extension. IN 6.0, you may also use wild cards for the file name.
For example, to look only at WPG files starting with W, enter
W*.WPG at this prompt.
All Rights Reserved (C) Copyright 1991-93 Jerry Stern
G R A P H C A T V. 3.0 13
WP60 AND WP51: It's very easy to just choose * or *.* at this
prompt, and try to read every file. Don't do it! The wild cards
are intended for cataloging mixed disks of graphics files. If you
use the * choice for directories containing program files,
GRAPHCAT will run far more slowly, because it must load and
identify as bad every program file in the directory. For best and
fastest results, use the real file extension of the graphics you
are looking for, unless you really do intend * or *.* to mean ALL
the files in the directory.
CATALOG TITLE
-------------
The third prompt asks for a title, and the macro will place that
title in a header on each page of the catalog. I recommend
entering the name of the graphics collection or the name of the
archived backup for that collection, such as "Business Graphics--
BUSINESS.ZIP" in this area.
NEW in version 3.0: If you do not enter a title, GRAPHCAT will
make one up for you. The default title is "Clip Art in" plus the
location where the graphics were found. (A typical title will be
"Clip Art in c:\wp51\graphics\*.*".)
COLUMNS

Enter the number of columns to use for the catalog. If you do not
want your catalog divided into columns, enter "1".
HEIGHT
------
Enter the height for the graphics. WordPerfect will calculate the
width to keep the graphics true to scale, room permitting. If
less than about twice the height of a graphic is available for
the width, some graphics in horizontal format will be compressed
to fit the column. Very wide graphics, like address labels or
scanned signatures, may require fewer columns than typical
images, for graphics of the same height. For four columns, a
height of one inch allows ample room for most images, and 28
images fit on one page. These combinations work well, and will
show on screen: five columns with a height of 3/4", resulting in
45 graphics per page, or 3 columns and 1.2" (18 per page), or two
columns and 1.8" (8 per page).
International Users of WP51: the default height set by GRAPHCAT
is 1", but you may enter a graphic height as you normally would.
If your default measurement is centimeters, you do not need to

specifically tell WP and GRAPHCAT; the program and the macro will
use your default measurement unit automatically.
International Users of WP60: the default height set by GRAPHCAT
is 2.5cm if you have set WP to use centimeters, 25mm for
millimeters, or 1" if you use inches. Enter measurement values as
you do normally.
GRAPHIC ON DISK
---------------
WP60 ONLY: You may choose to have GRAPHCAT retrieve all the
graphic images (default), or to let it read them off the disk as
it needs them, known as "Graphics on disk" or external graphics.
CAUTION: If you choose the "on disk" option, DO NOT SAVE the
catalog. Generally, printing it later will not work. If
cataloging a floppy disk of graphics, that disk must remain in
the drive during printing. Although this option saves large
amounts of temporary drive space, use it carefully. If
WordPerfect 6.0 cannot find your graphics when it comes time to
print, your catalog will contain only empty boxes and captions.
WORKING ON THE GRAPHIC...
-------------------------
After the last entry has been made, GRAPHCAT will begin loading
the graphics into the document. As each graphic is loaded, the
macro announces the new graphic on screen. When the directory of
graphics is large, this process will be considerably faster if
there is additional memory available for WordPerfect to use, but
hard disk space will be substituted automatically. If your system
does not have additional memory, be sure that your default
directory is set to a hard drive, rather than a floppy.
IF WordPerfect decides that a graphic in your sample directory is
not a proper graphics file, GRAPHCAT will add that file name to a
list of files that could not be loaded, and that list will be
printed at the end of the catalog. You may delete that message
after the catalog is prepared, or you may try to convert the bad
graphic or edit it with a graphics program, resave it, and run
GRAPHCAT again. Because not every version of every graphic format
is supported by WordPerfect, I prefer to leave the file list in
the catalog to identify a file that may be usable in other
software, but not in WordPerfect. (Or the disk may contain non-
graphic files, such as a README.1ST or FILE_ID.DIZ, and these
files will be listed automatically at the end of the catalog.)

G R A P H C A T V. 3.0 15
When the catalog is finished, the screen display will be replaced
by the new catalog page. You may, and should, preview the page
before printing.
GRAPHCAT may be stopped in mid-inventory by pressing the Cancel
key just once; there may be a time lag of a few seconds before
the macro stops. If you use the Cancel key to stop GRAPHCAT, the
macro will leave behind a warning at the top of the document that
the file is incomplete. The warning is just a comment box, and
may be deleted if the partial catalog is useful.
IN GENERAL
----------
GRAPHCAT and the INDEX macros have error trapping routines built
in to prevent garbage entries, and to turn off Reveal Codes if
needed, and will not try to run if you start them without enough
available open document space. If you wish to import the catalog
or the file list into a document, run the macro first, and then
add the other text or formatting into the catalog or file list.
GRAPHCAT builds very large documents. Your system will run faster
with 1) more memory, 2) better memory software, such as QEMM 386,
and 3) more available disk space. This was true with WP51, and
with WP60, it is more important than ever.
Since starting to catalog my clip art collection, I've found
pictures I didn't know I had, and I've used some of those in new
projects. Now that I don't have to hire extra help to create the
listings, I can find the picture I want in no time, and, better
yet, I can take the picture notebook with me to a co-worker, a
client, or a conference, and I don't need to borrow someone
else's computer and be at the mercy of someone else's operating
system.
EDITING ALL THE IMAGES AT ONCE
------------------------------
You may edit the finished catalog just as you would any other
document, but do turn on Reveal Codes (Alt-F3)--there are a lot
of codes in the document.
WP51: The borders may be changed by finding the [Fig Opt] code,
deleting it, and adding a new code in the same location. You can
also add a Justification:Center code at the beginning of the
document.
WP60: To edit the images all at once, press Graphics (Alt-F9),
(1) Graphics, (4) Styles, choose the style named GRAPHCAT, choose

including turning off color, increasing contrast, or rotating
images. Don't change the borders from this screen. Exit out of
the screen normally when done.
To change borders, press Graphics (Alt-F9), (3) Borders, (4)
Styles, choose the style named GCAT-BRD, choose (3) Edit, (2)
Lines, and make any changes you like. Exit the screen normally
when done.
INDEX, INDEX5, INDX4DOS, and FILEINDX
=====================================
The INDEX macros are WP macros that read a directory of files,
and convert that directory listing into a file that a database
program can import and add to a database. FILEINDX is a set of
database files for PC-File to use in importing the files created
by INDEX. The files FILEINDX.HDB, FILEINDX.DBF, and NAME.NDX
compose a sample graphics database for PC-File. These files
should be together on your hard disk; the ideal spot is a
directory called GRAPHCAT. See Installation on page 9 if you need
help preparing the directory.
IMPORTANT: The INDEX macros create and automatically erase a
small temporary file on your hard disk, named DELETE.ME,
containing a text directory listing. Under normal
conditions, you will never see it, but if INDEX is
interrupted before the file is deleted, the temporary file
left behind may be safely deleted. In WP51, the file will be
in the root directory of the c: drive. In WP60, the
temporary file will be placed in your macro directory.
WP60: Skip ahead to the next section--the multiple versions of
INDEX don't apply to WordPerfect 6.0.
WP51: Why three versions of INDEX for WP51? The DIR command in
DOS is changed in DOS 5 and 6 from those in older versions of
DOS, and different (and more powerful) in either 4DOS or NDOS.
Each DOS requires different command options, and different
handling of the directory file. Here's how to choose which
version of INDEX to use.
1) Are you running either 4DOS or NDOS?
Yes-Use INDX4DOS. No-Go to next question.
2) Are you running DOS 4.01 or OLDER?
YES-Use INDEX. No-Go to next question.
All Rights Reserved (C) Copyright 1991-93 Jerry Stern
G R A P H C A T V. 3.0 17
3) With DOS 5 or above, are you using SET DIRCMD?
YES-Use INDEX5. No-Use either INDEX or INDEX5.
Don't know: Use INDEX5.
The file produced by INDEX is a "comma-delimited mail-merge"
file. Most database programs can import these with no problems.
Although I created the FILEINDX format for keeping track of
graphics and clip art, the format and the INDEX macros can be
used just as easily to form a master catalog of every file on a
hard disk, or any category of files you choose. In addition to
the information from the directory and whatever label you enter
while running INDEX, the FILEINDX data screen allows room for
comments, because it isn't always possible to remember that
RX12-76.CGM is a picture of a troll at a bridge.
To use INDEX, run the macro in the usual way, by pressing Macro
(Alt-F10), typing the name of the macro, and pressing ENTER.
Answer the prompts that appear on screen in the same way as for
the first three prompts in GRAPHCAT.
The screen will flicker twice as WordPerfect shells out to DOS to
retrieve the directory to be converted and saves it to a
temporary file called delete.me. The macro will automatically
erase the temporary file after retrieving it into WP. Then INDEX
will search the listing, removing spaces as needed, and inserting
commas between columns, resulting in the comma-delimited list.
That list must be saved as a DOS text file for the database
program: Save the file by pressing Text In/Out (Ctrl-F5), (1) DOS
Text, (1) Save, and entering the file name for the data file.
IMPORTANT: When you first set up a database of clip art or
other files in a database, you will read and process many
directories. I have allowed for that process in INDEX. Start
the INDEX macro from a blank document. For the next disk,
start the macro from the same directory as the list created
during the former run. The next list will be added at the
bottom of the existing list. Once you have run each
directory through INDEX, save the list as a DOS text file,
exit WP, and import the data from within the database
program.
New in Version 3.0: The Index macros are more intelligent than in
older versions, and will keep track of which document is
workspace and which is a listing. Follow the instructions above,
and not as you did in older versions.

IMPORTING INTO PC-FILE
----------------------
Here are the steps for the import from within PC-File V. 6.5:
Begin by running INDEX, and save the file list as a DOS text
file, using a filename ending in the extension .WS. Run PC-File,
choose File, Open, and find and click on FILEINDX. From the main
menu, choose Utilities, then Import, then Mail Merge. Enter the
drive, and then the directory name of the location of the DOS
text file. Find and click on the name of your listing file.
Choose to Overwrite the data already in the database ONLY IF THIS
WILL BE THE FIRST BATCH OF FILENAMES ADDED. OTHERWISE, CHOOSE
APPEND DATA. Choose All to import the entire list of filenames.
BUILDING A DATABASE IN WORDPERFECT
----------------------------------
A database of clip art file names can also be built in
WordPerfect, using the INDEX file lists. Just some short hints
here: 1) After running INDEX, search for commas, and replace them
with tabs. 2) Add a tab set code in Document Initial Codes to
tidy up the columns. 3) Use WordPerfect's Sort function to place
the listing in any order you like.
TROUBLE-SHOOTER'S GUIDE--GRAPHCAT
=================================
1) GRAPHCAT won't read my graphics files. Why?
GRAPHCAT supports all graphics formats supported by WordPerfect,
and that list is quite large, and the new WP60 reads several new
file formats. However, the list is misleading. According to the
WP instruction manuals, TIF and PCX files are supported. That is
partially true. Sixteen-color PCX files are supported, but two-
color PCX files are not. (The number of colors refers to the
format of the image, and not the visible colors in the image.)
TIF files come in multiple flavors, and only a few of them are
supported. To make matters worse, many scanner programs create
non-standard files, unreadable by WordPerfect.
Before claiming that GRAPHCAT can't read a good graphics file,
test the files by manually retrieving the suspect files, and see
if they work. If they work manually, but not with GRAPHCAT,
contact Science Translations for assistance. As of this writing,
no graphics files have been found that work with WP but not with
GRAPHCAT.

G R A P H C A T V. 3.0 19
2) My scanner makes graphics in several formats. Some are showing
up reversed as white-on-black. What do I do?
This is not a GRAPHCAT problem, but... Most scanner programs can
save in several formats. Not all of these formats are the same
"flavors" as those that WordPerfect likes (see #1 above). Try
scanning an image normally, and then saving it in EVERY format
that your scanner software supports. Run the whole bunch through
GRAPHCAT to load them, and see which ones work. Use those formats
for all your scanning. In general, IMG files seem to work most
often, followed by PCX. (IMG is supported by WP51, but not by
WP60.) TIF is frequently a problem, because of the difference
between the multitude of TIF "flavors."
3) My images are squashed, and printed much too narrow.
Run GRAPHCAT again for that set of images, using fewer columns,
but the same image height. Or, if you are comfortable with
editing in Reveal Codes, you can delete the Column Def code, and
replace it with a new code for fewer columns.
4) My file names wrap to the next line.
On the completed catalog, change your initial base font.
WP51: Press Format (Shift-F8), (3) Document, (3) Initial Base
Font, and choose a smaller font.
WP60: Press Format (Shift-F8), (4) Document, (3) Initial Base
Font, (1) Font, and choose a smaller font.
5) My document prints slowly.
The graphics quality setting affects speed--higher quality takes
longer. If a coarse image is acceptable, choose Draft graphics
quality before printing. Additional computer memory will help, as
will a disk cache program. Ask your local dealer for help.
6) Only half of my catalog page prints.
Some laser printers may not have enough internal memory to print
a page of that complexity. On a laser printer, if the entire page
does not print, try printing the page at a lower setting for
graphics quality, or use fewer columns. Adding memory is a more
expensive fix, but worthwhile.
7) GRAPHCAT loads properly in WP51, and the big box appears on
screen, but when I tell it what directory to catalog, An error
message box appears. But I have checked--the files are good
graphics files in the directory I've entered.

G R A P H C A T V. 3.0 20
This is an inconsistent error that occurs mostly with releases of
WP from 6/90 to 12/90, although I have seen it more rarely with
newer releases. Some of the settings in your configuration file
are corrupt. To test this, start WP from the DOS prompt (No
menus!) with the start up switch /x, like this:
C:\WP51:> wp /x
The x switch temporarily restores your copy of WP to the original
defaults--it ignores all the choices you've made in Setup. Try
running GRAPHCAT with this switch. If GRAPHCAT runs properly,
then exit WP, restart WP normally, go into Setup and write down
your options and settings. Next, exit WP, rename the file
WP{WP}.SET to WPSET.OLD, and restart WP normally. Re-enter your
options, and both WP and GRAPHCAT should run correctly.
Alternative solution--upgrade to the newest release of WP; the
problem does not seem to occur with any releases dated 9/91 or
newer.
8) GRAPHCAT runs perfectly, but I cannot print the result file.
The error messages say I don't have enough memory.
This is strictly a WP problem, and it is just what it says. Try
running WP without any popup programs or tsr software, from the
command line (No menus!). Consider investing in a good memory
manager program to give WP more usable memory. Print each page
separately, or when running GRAPHCAT, try using fewer
columns--there will be more white space on each page, but less
strain on limited system resources during printing.
9) When I try to print a catalog of graphics found on a floppy
disk, WP51 reads and writes to the floppy drive, and printing is
extremely slow.
WordPerfect 5.1 is placing its temporary print queue files on the
floppy. There is an easy fix for this. Start WP with the command:
WP /PF=(path)
For example, try WP /pf-c:
This command, which was added in the 3/90 release of WP, will
divert the temporary printing files to the drive and path chosen.
Printing speed should be improved considerably over allowing WP
to use the floppy.
10) I am using WP 5.1 dated 3/9/92 or newer, and whenever I run
GRAPHCAT, the error box appears that says that the Sort option in
list files is turned off. Huh?
The 3/9/92 interim release of WP 5.1 added a new feature--it can
show directories in the list files screen in the order the files
are on the disk. This is faster than the usual way, but less
organized. Who wants a list of graphics that isn't in
alphabetical order? To run GRAPHCAT, you must do what the box
All Rights Reserved (C) Copyright 1991-93 Jerry Stern
G R A P H C A T V. 3.0 21
tells you: Enter Setup (Shift-F1), choose (3) Environment, (4)
Document Management/Summary, (5) Sort List Files, and choose Yes,
and then Exit (F7) to return to your document screen. GRAPHCAT
will now run normally.
11) The message "Position Hyphen" appears when I try to run
GRAPHCAT on a directory of mixed graphics and text files. This
only happens when some of the documents contain a "Hyphenation
On" code, using the * choice on GRAPHCAT's extension line.
The hyphenation message will occur only with hyphenated
documents. You can avoid them by 1) Not using the * wild card
extension, but instead choosing the extension of the graphics
files, or 2) resetting the hyphenation options by pressing Setup
(Shift-F1), (3)-Environment, (7) Prompt for Hyphenation, (1)
Never, and Exit (F7)
12) Sometimes when I use the * or *.* wild cards, GRAPHCAT loads
a file as a graphic that isn't one. The document loads and prints
normally, but the box is either empty or contains a random
pattern.
The * wild card choice was intended for reading disks containing
mixed graphics in different formats, such as WPG and PCX and CGM
graphics mixed together, NOT for attempting to load every program
file on your hard drive in the attempt to see if any of them are
graphics. GRAPHCAT will correctly identify nearly every file as a
graphic or not a graphic, but there are exceptions. For example,
try loading the WordPerfect file LIBRARY.STY as a graphic--the
resulting empty graphics box is harmless, but it shouldn't
happen, and since it does not cause any error messages, GRAPHCAT
can't eliminate it.
To avoid these problems, when cataloging a directory of mixed
graphics and program files, use the appropriate extension, such
as PCX or WPG on the second line of GRAPHCAT's menu, and save the
wild card use for disks holding only graphics.
13) Some of my images display or print in WP60 with very pale
dots in the background.
This happens occasionally with bitmapped images. To fix it from
the finished catalog, press Graphics (Alt-F9), (1) Graphics, (4)
Styles, page down to the style named GRAPHCAT, and choose (3)
Edit, (3) Image Settings, (2) Color Adjust, (2) Contrast, type
1.0, and press (Enter). Press Exit (F7) enough times to return to
your document--all the images will be fixed at once.

TROUBLE-SHOOTER'S GUIDE--INDEX
==============================
1) When I run INDEX, INDEX5, or INDX4DOS, my system pauses at the
DOS screen with a message of "Sharing Violation."
The INDEX macros are partially incompatible with SHARE. The fix
is simple--remove SHARE from your boot files, unless you are
running on a network, or some of your software specifically
insists on SHARE. In DOS 5 and 6, SHARE is only used to protect
files from simultaneous access by multiple programs. SHARE is NOT
needed with large drives (over 32 megs) when running with DOS 5
or 6. If you are running on a networked system, and really do
need SHARE, then just choose "Abort" or "Ignore" at the warning
prompt, and the macro will continue normally.
2) I am running WP51 and DOS with the NDOS command.com
replacement, and INDEX5 results in an error message that the "-p"
parameter is invalid. INDEX runs, but results in a mangled file
that will not work as an import to my database software.
With WP51 and either 4DOS or NDOS, don't use INDEX or INDEX5. The
macro INDEX4DOS creates the merge files for either of these
programs, and the extra directory features they allow have been
used to reduce the macro's workload, and increase its speed.
